The Youngers departed sea-level Nice for the French Alps this morning. After a nearly 6 hour drive that included an ascent of the Col de la Bonnette, we arrived in Besse en Oisans (elev. 1,500 m) and the Hotel Alpin, home for the next 4 nights. Hudson was a trooper on the long drive, as he has been on the entire trip. He serves as a little ambassador, compensating for his parents' destruction of the French language (hey, the Rick Steve's phrase book can only take you so far). Waitresses, concierges... they all crumble at his flirtations. He also has mastered saying "au revoir," although "bon jour" has evaded him.
Hudson's parents are both very excited about staying in Besse. His Daddy is going to rent a bike and ride the mythical Alpe d'Huez, while his Mommy can't wait to hit the hiking trails - the GR 54 passes right through town. As for the little guy, he seems happy as long as there are people to see, good food to eat, and rocks or twigs to play with. The French Alps have it all!
